Einwandererzentralstelle (EWZ) is German for Central Immigration Control Department.  EWZ50 records contain processing forms for German citizenship – from Russia - during the years 1939 through early 1945.  They “may” contain information on families that a researcher would otherwise not be able to find because of the political situation at this time.

Type of information available in an EWZ50 document:  information on applicant including - name, birth date and place, last place of residence, name of parents, name of children and birth dates, marital status, date and place of marriage, information on spouse and the information on spouses’ parents, date transported and latest address or camp.  The form usually includes pedigree chart where up to four generations can be recounted to prove that the applicant was 100 percent German.  There is also a section for the applicant’s story and the dates of their residences in Russia to the present.   Some EWZ records have pictures of the applicant. These forms (when completed and accepted) were processed so applicants could go to Germany.

Below is a portion of a translated EWZ50 record of Anna Remisch – born Gitlein – from Hildmann, Saratov, Volga, Russia.   (For privacy concerns – I use a record from my own ancestor.)

This will illustrate to “visual learners” and “non-Germans” what can be learned from investigating these records (in conjunction with records, censuses and other methods of research).

Please note that the Hildmann EWZ Records are in German but follow a prescribed “format” which may make them accessible to researchers without a firm knowledge of the German language.
